National Association of Minority Fitness Nurses (NAMFN) Purpose of NAMFN: To provide licensed registered and practical minority nurses, who have a passion to improve health through fitness, with resources/information, networking, and career opportunities in various wellness settings. To assist minority nurses who want to move from 'sickcare' into true 'healthcare'. Please indicate, "$ in fitness" in the message section. The free report will be sent to you within a few days via your e-mail that you provide. Goals of NAMFN: To promote physical movement as a means to lower health-related numbers (BP, blood sugar levels, resting heart rates, body fat levels, etc.), in turn, with physician approval, reduce and/or eliminate medication intake. To increase the balance, energy level, range of motion (ROM), and strength of clients, who may be under a physicians care, to maintain their ADL's and improve their ability to remain vital and independent for as long as possible. To work in a collaborative effort with our clients and their chosen Health Care Professionals (HCP) to achieve the most realistic, positive wellness plan for the best results. To assist licensed minority nurses to become Certified Fitness Professionals. This can be all varieties of group exercise instruction, Pilates, yoga and of course, personal fitness training.
Philosophy of NAMFN: All members may have a different method of achieving optimal health, which will be respected and valued. However, the organizations's philosphy is to use our nursing background, patient care and patient advocate skills to ultimately reach those populations at most risk. Those populations are seniors, children, minorities, and those with chronic illness. To increase the VO2 max, improve the strength, increase the flexibility, even a little, will improve the quality of their lives, increase their independence, and aid them to take responsibility for their actions and ultimately, their own health. As Minority Fitness Nurses, we know that increasing exercise is only one aspect of being healthy; yet we also know that once people get stronger FIRST (muscular and cardiorespiratory-through fitness training) and the more flexible they become, they will make better food choices, and have more energy to utilize the every day opportunites to move and burn more calories throughout their day. (park farther away, get up & talk to a co-worker, instead of e-mail, look for opportunites to move instead of sit) So, when we, Minority Fitness Nurses are asked the question, "What should I do first...start dieting, stop smoking, or start exercising?" Our answer is always..."START EXERCISING. Now." Chances are that if you wait for this at risk person to lose weight or quit smoking before they start exercising with you...you'll never see them exercise. We use our assessment skills as nurses and fitness training to get them started on a fitness program they will get results with and can be successful. They will eventually lose weight and/or quit smoking. NAMFN MOTTO: "Increase Physical Strength*FIRST; Weight Loss SECOND" By *Physical strength we mean muscular and cardiorespiratory. One of my favorite quotes, I believe Martin Luther King Jr. said it best, "When standing at the bottom of the staircase, don't focus on the staircase; focus on the first step."
